Whilst we have been expecting the news of an iPhone 5 release for some time, Apple’s recent keynote speech revealed something unexpected. The latest Apple smartphone is not the iPhone 5, but the iPhone 4S, a heavily upgraded version of the best-selling iPhone 4.
In this article I will take a look at some of the upgrades it offers over it’s predecessor.
Camera
One of the main features that people look at when choosing a new smartphone is the camera. The previous iPhone 4 had a 5 megapixel unit, and as expected, the pixel count has been upped considerably to 8 megapixels, also supporting HD video capture in 1080p compared to the 720p of the iPhone 4. Therefore, the iPhone 4 is now positioned in the market as one of the most powerful camera phones available.
Siri
Siri is the name given by Apple to the iPhone 4S’s voice recognition system. Even the iPhone 3GS and several other handsets offer basic voice commands, Apple has taken this action to a new level. It works on the basis of the user holding down the home button for a couple of seconds to activate Siri, which will then answer many different questions. It allows users to get answers to their questions based on keywords, but the really clever thing about this feature is that it learns the more it is used. For example, in the recent keynote speech, one of the speakers set a reminder to “call wife when I leave work”. This is a great example of the capabilities Siri. It demonstrates that after being used previously, it recognises who the “Wife” contact is, and where work is based on GPS. There are many more applications for Siri though. Web searches, replying to text messages and emails, basically any of the main utility apps of the iPhone can be utilised by Siri. Truly groundbreaking stuff.
Screen
The iPhone 4 was the first phone to boasts a pixel resolution of 640x 960 (330 ppi). The iPhone 4S also boasts this, meaning the iPhone franchise retains its status as the smartphone with the highest pixel resolution available. This is the so called “retina” display, named due to the fact that the display has more pixels than the human eye can actually distinguish. In conjunction with the all new 1 GHz dual-core processor, the graphics are improved somewhat, making it the perfect choice for gamers, multimedia users as well as anyone who just wants the best smartphone experience available.
This article highlights just some of the improvements the Apple has made. Although some will be disappointed with the lack of a new iPhone 5, the vast majority are sure to be impressed by Apple doing what it does best; taking a winning formula and making it even better every year.
