The iPhone 4S Boasts An Upgraded A5 Dual-Core Processor For Improved Performance

The phenomenally popular iPhone 4 has recently been upgraded with a new version called the iPhone 4S. Apple has made a similar move to when they released the iPhone 3GS. It is essentially an upgraded version of the last model, with a few refinements and enhancements. The 'S' in the title stands for speed, and one of the key components for delivering this is the processor. In this article I will take a closer look at this key feature of the iPhone 4S, compared with that of its predecessor, the iPhone 4.

One of the most important features in terms of smartphone performance is the processor. This is responsible for delivering the computing power to various aspects of the hardware and software, and determines the level of performance in features such as the response times of the touchscreen, the loading times of web pages, the opening and operating speeds of applications, and the graphics on the screen. The original iPhone 4 has a very capable 1 GHz Apple A4 processor. At the time of its initial release, the handset had one of the most powerful processors of any smartphone. But, times change, and this has been reflected with the all new A5 chip found in the iPhone 4S. This dual-core processor also clocks at 1 GHz, but thanks to the dual-core aspect, it essentially has twice as much power. It allows for more efficient multitasking, and boasts some impressive stats. For example, the processor allows the camera to operate at speeds previously unheard of on a smartphone. From the time a user opens the camera application, it takes just over a second before a photo can be taken, and from then on, only half a second for each additional photo. Also, it allows for 'dual-core' graphics to be displayed on the screen, which adds a whole new aspect to gaming and video viewing on the device. This takes the power of the processor and uses it to create multi-layered, and of course lightning fast graphics.

The processor may not be the most glamorous or fashionable part of a smartphone, but for those who like to have a top performing smartphone, it is an aspect which should not be overlooked. The iPhone 4S certainly caters in this department, but the device of course offers much more. Everything that users loved about the previous iPhone instalments are here. The easy to use and customisable iOS (the new handset bringing a new version, iOS5), the fantastic retina display and responsive touchscreen, and of course there is the multimedia ecosystem consisting of iTunes, iPod and AppStore integration.

With the iPhone 4S, Apple has done what it does best; taken a winning formula, and somehow made it even better. Everything from about this phone,  from the spec sheet to the styling, is as good as it gets. Now the iPhone 4S has been unveiled, we can only imagine what we will see from the next instalment of the popular series.
