The phenomenally popular iPhone 4 has recently been upgraded with a new version called the iPhone 4S. Apple has made a similar move to when they released the iPhone 3GS. It is essentially an upgraded version of the last model, with a few refinements and enhancements. The 'S' in the title stands for speed, and one of the key components for delivering this is the processor. In this article I will take a closer look at this key feature of the iPhone 4S, compared with that of its predecessor, the iPhone 4.

One of the most important features in terms of smartphone performance is the processor. This is responsible for delivering the computing power to various aspects of the hardware and software, and determines the level of performance in features such as the response times of the touchscreen, the loading times of web pages, the opening and operating speeds of applications, and the graphics on the screen. The original iPhone 4 has a very capable 1 GHz Apple A4 processor. At the time of its initial release, the handset had one of the most powerful processors of any smartphone. But, times change, and this has been reflected with the all new A5 chip found in the iPhone 4S. This dual-core processor also clocks at 1 GHz, but thanks to the dual-core aspect, it essentially has twice as much power. It allows for more efficient multitasking, and boasts some impressive stats. The processor may not be the most glamorous or fashionable part of a smartphone, but for those who like to have a top performing smartphone, it is an aspect which should not be overlooked. With the smartphone market flooded with high end devices, how does it stack up against the offering of other major players such as Samsung? In this article, I will attempt to find out by pitting the iPhone 4S against the Samsung Galaxy S2.

The Samsung Galaxy S2 has proven to be a very popular device, as was the original Galaxy S. In fact, the Galaxy S2 was recently crowned 'Phone of the Year' by gadget magazine T3. This is no mean feat, considering the fact that it faced competition from impressive some devices, with the Motorola Atrix, HTC Sensation, HTC Incredible S and Apple iPhone 4 all making the shortlist. The Samsung Galaxy S2 came out on top for a number of reasons.

The handset boasts all the bells and whistles of a high-end Android device in terms of software, with access to Android Market and the Samsung TouchWiz UI. Hardware wise, the device is impressive in pretty much every aspect. To provide all the necessary computing power to hardware and software alike, there is a 1.2 GHz dual-core processor which aids many aspects of the phones performance, ranging from response times of the screen, multitasking, web browsing and many more. The camera boasts 8 megapixels, with 1080p video capture and comes with an LED flash along with a comprehensive package of adjustable settings and image enhancing features. The screen is also another impressive feature of the Galaxy S2. It is large, measuring 4.3 inches, with a pixel resolution of 480x 800. With Super AMOLED capacitive Plus touchscreen technology, it is responsive, and it is renowned for its ability to offer great display quality when in direct sunlight. The handset itself is very slim, at 8.5mm, and weighs just 116 grams.

The iPhone 4S is similar in many respects to the Samsung Galaxy S2, on paper at least. Software wise, the major difference is in the operating system, with iOS running the intuitive and customisable interface. There are many aspects of the hardware which are similar; the camera is 8 megapixels, with 1080p video just like the Samsung device. However Apple claims that the camera on the new iPhone has many unique features such as the lens technology and the speed at which the camera operates. The latter is thanks largely to the processor, which is a 1 GHz dual-core Apple A4 processor. Whilst this is slightly less than the 1.2 GHz offered by the Samsung, it will hardly be noticeable during day to day use. One of Apple's advantages over the competition is its multimedia ecosystem, which allows iPhones to integrate with iTunes, iPod and AppStore. Whilst the likes of the Android Market are impressive, and certainly catching up with Apple, it has to be said that the AppStore is superior in terms of both quality and quantity of available Apps. The iPhone 4S has another advantage over the Samsung Galaxy S2; the fact that it is new. Therefore, Apple has had more time to include its latest technology in the handset. The new Siri and iCloud features are good examples of this, and it gives Apple the edge as this kind of technology was not around when the Samsung Galaxy S2 was released.

Choosing between the iPhone 4S and the Samsung Galaxy S2 is a close call. Technically, it would be rather unfair to say that one is better than the other. As the manufacturer's flagship phones, each has its own strengths and weaknesses. I believe that the ultimate deciding factor would be down to the individual's preference for either Android or iOS, but having said that, Apple may have the edge thanks to its all new features like Siri and iCloud, as Samsung currently has nothing similar to offer.

Yesterday Apple unveiled their latest smartphone, the iPhone 4S. This is the fifth generation in the popular range and includes some new features as well as some improved specification. Here we take a look at the design of the phone together with its high quality screen.

Contrary to popular belief Apple have left the design of the new iPhone 4S unchanged from last years iPhone 4. This will please many consumers as this model does ooze style and looks unlike any other phone currently available. There is a slight weight increase but it is so small it would be very hard to detect at just 3 grammes. Looking at the design of the phone and the body itself is made from two sheets of glass. This is a refreshing change from the plastic and metallic bodies that most other phones offer. You may think that the iPhone may be more prone to damage as it is made from glass but Apple have opted to use a toughened glass which proves incredibly durable. Many people forget that phone displays have been made from glass for many years so its not a new idea to incorporate such a material on a mobile handset. The tempered glass that the 4S uses is named Gorilla Glass and is similar to the material used on high speed train windscreens which makes it much more durable than you would expect. Not only does this material help the phone if it is dropped onto a hard surface but it is also very scratch resistant. This is perfect for the modern phone user who inevitably has their phone in a pocket or bag along with numerous other items that may scratch the screen.

The iPhone 4Smeasures 115.2 x 58.6 x 9.3mm and is one of the slimmest phones available. The phone feels relatively compact against many rival models such as the Samsung Galaxy Note because Apple have opted to stick with the 3.5 inch display that was used in its predecessor. This means that the phone appeals from a design point of view as it is not too large but at the same time boasts enough size to offer an excellent gaming and video playback experience. Anybody who has ever lost or misplaced a handset will appreciate this feature as it enables you to remotely track your devices location. As soon as you realise that your handset is missing you can simply sign into iCloud.com and locate your missing piece of hardware on a map. If you do not have access to a laptop you can use another device with the Find My Phone app installed to perform this procedure. So once you have found your device you now need to get the attention of whoever has it or is near to it. The successor to the iPhone 4 has finally been revealed by Apple. Called the iPhone 4S and not iPhone 5 as was widely rumoured, sales are set to commence during October 2011. In this the first part of two articles we take a look at the improvements introduced in this new smartphone.

First of all we turn to appearance. Always an important part of any Apple device, many expected the new Apple smartphone to sport an all new casing, but what we have got is more of the same. The iPhone4S doesn\'t change its appearance at all compared with the previous model. This isn't necessarily a bad thing as the current iPhone\'s is premium materials results in a great looking and feeling handset.

In fact the only external change is to the antennas, a previous problem for Apple when free iPhone 4 bumpers had to be issued to cure reception problems. The revised 4S antenna has been split into two separate pieces which can automatically switch between the two to enable better reception or to send and receive data at the same time without compromising speed.

The 3.5-inch 960 x 640 pixel retina display remains despite many rival handsets from the likes of HTC and Motorola featuring 4.3 inch screens. Even though they have larger screens they cannot match the overall resolution of the iPhone 4S and as a result don't appear quite as crisp when viewing text or high resolution images. A further advantage is that the smaller screen permits a smaller casing, a welcome plus point in a device you carry around all day.

Now we look at the improvements made under the skin where most of the changes are seen in the iPhone 4S.

The most significant upgrade is the introduction of the A5 dual core processor from the iPad 2. Apple's new CEO Tim Cook claimed that the new CPU is twice as fast as that of its forerunner with graphics performance now seven times greater. This important upgrade brings the iPhone in line with its major competitors such as the HTC Sensation, Samsung Galaxy S2 and Motorola Atrix, all of which sport dual-core processors.

The GSM and CDMA network technologies have been combined in the iPhone 4S (in previous phones Apple had chosen to produce two separate versions). This will streamline manufacturing and distribution for Apple as well as permitting owners to switch between network providers without the need to change phones.
As far as network technologies go, the only improvements are to the mobile broadband speeds which are probably brought about by using the HSPA standard. Despite no 4G technology being incorporated in the device, Apple claims the hardware improvements will double mobile data speeds to virtually match 4G speeds. Real world tests should hopefully verify this rather ambitious claim.

— If you own an iPhone 4: The new phone will have a faster processor and a sharper, more responsive camera. Otherwise, it's pretty much the same. It will come with improved software, but you'll get that as a free update on your iPhone 4, too. As an iPhone 4 owner, you should consider the 4S only if you absolutely must have the latest and greatest, or if your old phone is broken. Since the 4S is less than two years old, your carrier will probably make you pay more than the $199 base price if you upgrade, because you haven't 'paid off' the subsidized price of your old phone yet.

There's speculation that the more significant iPhone 5 upgrade may be less than a year away, and it could add important new features that are worth waiting for.

— If you own an older iPhone: Apple's new software, iOS 5, will work on the iPhone 3GS, but not the original iPhone or 3G. Take the launch of the iPhone 4S as a good opportunity to upgrade to a faster, more responsive phone, with a sharper screen.

The big cost of owning an iPhone isn't in the purchase price, it\'s in your monthly service fees. If you want a smartphone for less, look at getting a handset that runs Google Inc.'s Android software from a no-contract carrier like Virgin Mobile, MetroPCS or Cricket. The biggest weakness of Android phones is that there are fewer good third-party applications available for them, but you'll get roughly 80 percent of the functionality of an iPhone for 50 percent of the cost.

— If you're a Sprint subscriber: If you\'ve nursed a longing for an iPhone but haven't yet moved over to AT&T or Verizon, now's your chance ... probably. Sprint hasn't yet said what kind of plans will be available for the iPhone. It's also not clear if Sprint will sell only the 4S or also the cheaper 4.But it's a fair bet that Sprint will keep its unlimited data plans as a way to lure subscribers from Verizon and AT&T, which cap monthly data usage on smartphones.

It's worth noting that the iPhone won't support 'Sprint 4G,' which is what Sprint calls Clearwire Corp.'s high-speed data network. Sprint sells a number of other smartphones that can access this network for faster Web browsing, downloads and uploads, for no additional cost. On the other hand, the Sprint iPhone 4S will most likely be able to roam internationally, a very rare feature on Sprint smartphones.

— If you're an AT&T subscriber: The Big Orange was the first carrier to place caps on the monthly data consumption of its iPhone subscribers, to keep them from overloading its network. The addition of Sprint to the stable of iPhone carriers will probably give you the option to jump ship and get an unlimited data plan, but Sprint hasn't confirmed this yet.

On the other hand, Sprint's data speeds are lower than AT&T's, and it doesn't have the network of Wi-Fi hotspots that AT&T does.

AT&T will still be the only U.S. carrier to sell the iPhone 3GS, a two-year old model. The price will be cut to nothing, from $49. But AT&T still won't sell the phone for use on prepaid plans, which could yield substantial savings.

— If you're a Verizon subscriber: One thing that\'s missing from the iPhone 4S is the ability to tap into Verizon's latest high-speed data networks, which uses the so-called 'LTE' technology. That feature might arrive in the next iPhone, which presumably will be the iPhone 5. There's speculation that we might not have to wait until next summer to see that model.

Apple is usually conservative about adding new wireless technology to its phones, but Verizon has been selling LTE phones for half a year already.

If you travel a lot, it might be worth upgrading from the 4 to the 4S because you'll be able to use it on wireless networks in other countries. But the upgrade will be expensive, because Verizon iPhones are so new. You haven't yet 'paid it off' through your monthly service fees.

Perhaps the most talked about feature on the new iPhone 4S is the new intelligent assistant named Siri.  Siri enables you to speak a command into the phone and leave the handset to do the rest.  This method of command can revolutionise how we use our mobile handsets and is certainly the most impressive example of voice recognition technology to date.

Siri can be used to carry out a host of different functions on the phone.  Older voice control systems used to enable simple tasks such as searching your contacts but Apple have taken it to a whole new level with this new system.  One very attractive aspect of Siri is that it allows you to talk normally unlike similar features which require you to speak very slowly and precisely.  Once you have given a command your handset will then talk back to you so that you know your task has been carried out correctly.  Siri works with nearly all of the models built in applications which is why such a large range of functions can be performed.  When it comes to music playback for example you can say the name of the song you want to hear and the phone will automatically play it.  Setting a wake up alarm is easy, just say the time you want it set for and the phone does the rest.  Even more complex tasks such as checking the weather for your current location can be performed.  There are no concerns as to whether the task has been carried out correctly because the phone speaks back to you as a means of confirmation.  This model becomes a true personal assistant in every sense of the word.

The release of the new iPhone 4S is nearly upon us and for the first time we now have a definite list of features that this new model will include.  Multi media fans will be pleased to see the video recording capabilities of this model boosted to 1080P quality making it the ultimate phone for recording footage.  Here we take a look at this facility in more detail.

The video capture feature on the iPhone 4S is one the very best currently available.  Other models such as the Samsung Galaxy S2 also offer great features in this area but none rival the overall quality that is sported by the Apple device.

Yesterday Apple unveiled their latest smartphone, the iPhone 4S.  This is the fifth generation in the popular range and includes some new features as well as some improved specification.  Here we take a look at the design of the phone together with its high quality screen.

Contrary to popular belief Apple have left the design of the new iPhone 4S unchanged from last years iPhone 4.  This will please many consumers as this model does ooze style and looks unlike any other phone currently available.  There is a slight weight increase but it is so small it would be very hard to detect at just 3 grammes.  Looking at the design of the phone and the body itself is made from two sheets of glass.  This is a refreshing change from the plastic and metallic bodies that most other phones offer.  You may think that the iPhone may be more prone to damage as it is made from glass but Apple have opted to use a toughened glass which proves incredibly durable.  Many people forget that phone displays have been made from glass for many years so its not a new idea to incorporate such a material on a mobile handset.  The tempered glass that the 4S uses is named Gorilla Glass and is similar to the material used on high speed train windscreens which makes it much more durable than you would expect.  Not only does this material help the phone if it is dropped onto a hard surface but it is also very scratch resistant.  This is perfect for the modern phone user who inevitably has their phone in a pocket or bag along with numerous other items that may scratch the screen.

The iPhone 4S measures 115.2 x 58.6 x 9.3mm and is one of the slimmest phones available.  The phone feels relatively compact against many rival models such as the Samsung Galaxy Note because Apple have opted to stick with the 3.5 inch display that was used in its predecessor.  This means that the phone appeals from a design point of view as it is not too large but at the same time boasts enough size to offer an excellent gaming and video playback experience.  Apple are producing this model in two colour finishes, Black and White, and both of these models should prove a success with consumers.  The black option maintains a more premium look whilst the white variety should appeal to a younger and more style orientated audience.  An aluminium band is sandwiched between the two sheets of glass and this not only adds to the overall look but acts as the antenna for the phones various features.

The iPhone 4S may not be the complete overhaul that everybody was expecting but it still remains a phone that not only boasts high specification and an excellent interface but also a design that sets it apart from every other phone.

Whilst we have been expecting the news of an iPhone 5 release for some time, Apple’s recent keynote speech revealed something unexpected. The latest Apple smartphone is not the iPhone 5, but the iPhone 4S, a heavily upgraded version of the best-selling iPhone 4.

In this article I will take a look at some of the upgrades it offers over it’s predecessor.

Camera
One of the main features that people look at when choosing a new smartphone is the camera. The previous iPhone 4 had a 5 megapixel unit, and as expected, the pixel count has been upped considerably to 8 megapixels, also supporting HD video capture in 1080p compared to the 720p of the iPhone 4. Therefore, the iPhone 4 is now positioned in the market as one of the most powerful camera phones available.

Siri
Siri is the name given by Apple to the iPhone 4S’s voice recognition system. Even the iPhone 3GS and several other handsets offer basic voice commands, Apple has taken this action to a new level. It works on the basis of the user holding down the home button for a couple of seconds to activate Siri, which will then answer many different questions. It allows users to get answers to their questions based on keywords, but the really clever thing about this feature is that it learns the more it is used. For example, in the recent keynote speech, one of the speakers set a reminder to “call wife when I leave work”. This is a great example of the capabilities Siri. It demonstrates that after being used previously, it recognises who the “Wife” contact is, and where work is based on GPS. There are many more applications for Siri though. Web searches, replying to text messages and emails, basically any of the main utility apps of the iPhone can be utilised by Siri. Truly groundbreaking stuff.

Screen
The iPhone 4 was the first phone to boasts a pixel resolution of 640x 960 (330 ppi). The iPhone 4S also boasts this, meaning the iPhone franchise retains its status as the smartphone with the highest pixel resolution available. This is the so called “retina” display, named due to the fact that the display has more pixels than the human eye can actually distinguish. In conjunction with the all new 1 GHz dual-core processor, the graphics are improved somewhat, making it the perfect choice for gamers, multimedia users as well as anyone who just wants the best smartphone experience available.

This article highlights just some of the improvements the Apple has made. Although some will be disappointed with the lack of a new iPhone 5, the vast majority are sure to be impressed by Apple doing what it does best; taking a winning formula and making it even better every year.
